Veterans Memorial Park: Fisheries and Water Quality Monitoring

Objective

Fish and water quality monitoring was initiated at Veterans Memorial Park to evaluate the effects of habitat restoration. Veterans Memorial Park includes a pond on the north and south sides of the Muskegon River near its confluence with Muskegon Lake. In 2015, restoration activities were initiated that aimed to improve habitat in both ponds and reconnect the river with the south pond. Initial observations suggest that habitat restoration improved the water quality of the south pond, which likely corresponded to improvements in the fish assemblage. We plan to re-sample Veterans Memorial Park to provide a stronger basis to evaluate the effects of habitat restoration.
