Open to: All Nursing Students
Community health center nursing experiences will include windshield surveys, individual and family health assessments, culturally appropriate health education, and analysis of the health system in Ghana, including the role of nurses, traditional health practitioners, and, how as a country, they address WHO millennial goals.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore nearby towns and the city of Cape Coast, which was the largest slave-trading center in West Africa. From the art markets at the city center to European forts and castles along endless beaches, students will find themselves surrounded by diverse cultures.
-Gain insight into community-based health care systems
-Fulfill required community health hours or other leadership clinical hours in an international setting based on course requirements
-Increase cultural competence through participation in local events in Cape Coast and nearby towns (example: Kakum National Park (rainforest canopy walk)

Where will I live?
Students will stay in university housing at the University of Cape Coast or a local hotel depending on availability.
Who is eligible to participate?
Open to all GVSU nursing majors. 2.5 GPA required.
Non-GVSU students are not eligible for this program

What credits will I receive?
Students will register for one course based on their progression in the program:
NUR 417: Professional Nursing IV
NUR 467: Professional Nursing V
Other NUR 400 level or higher courses per permission of faculty
*This program does not fulfill the WP or Issues general education requirement
One credit will be completed in Ghana, and the remainder at GVSU. This program will replace the required 42 community health nursing hours. This program will also fulfill the clinical requirements for RN to BSN 400 level courses
NUR 500, NUR 610, NUR 677, NUR 723, NUR 733, NUR 738, AND/OR NUR 740
Graduate students will meet with the Associate Dean to determine course objectives.

Non-GVSU Students: Non-GVSU students admitted for study abroad are not eligible for Financial Aid from GVSU. Check with your home school’s study abroad and financial aid offices for details on applying for financial aid from your home school toward study abroad program costs.

FACULTY-LED PROGRAM GRANT: up to $500. All degree-seeking students who apply to their faculty-led program by the priority deadline are automatically considered for a grant of up to $500 from the Padnos International Center. Students must have a current FAFSA on file to be eligible. No application required.
