Macquarie University (MU) is a large, public university with more than 39,000 students. It is recognized as an outstanding leader in higher education in Australia, and ranks in the top 2% of universities in the world by Academic Ranking of World Universities. It has a thriving international student population, making it one of the most international Universities in the world. The campus offers a wide range of services to support students in their academic endeavors, as well as a vibrant campus life. Students will be engaged in academic courses along with Australian and other international students.

Macquarie University is located in North Ryde, 30 minute drive, or 45 minutes by public transportation,  northwest of Sydney Harbor and the Sydney central business district. You will enjoy the best of both worlds with many activities offered in Sydney’s booming city life, as well as the relaxing nearby beaches and Sydney harbor. This vibrant city offers a little something for everyone. MU is connected to the city by underground rail with its own dedicated train station.

Based on the Economist Intelligence Unit's "Safe Cities Index," for 2015, Sydney is ranked the 6th safest city in the world. It is also considered one of the best student cities. Sydney serves as the economic and financial hub of Australia and hosts regional headquarters for around 500 multinational companies.

The cost of any study abroad program depends to a large extent on the participant's personal spending habits and lifestyle.

Visa Information

Detailed information on how to apply for a student visa will be provided by Macquarie University after you have received final acceptance into the program. Students are encouraged to check their SPAM folder for the visa confirmation email as several past participants have reported this notification going into their SPAM folder. Housing and Meals

Macquarie University offers accommodation to all exchange students. Students have a choice of on-campus housing or nearby apartments. There are a variety of housing options to choose from and a wide range of costs. Many past exchange participants have recommended the Macquarie University Village apartments; however, the choice is up to you.

Macquarie University (MU) is a comprehensive university with a wide range of course options for undergraduate students.

Winter (semester 1): February-end of June (typically 19 weeks, including orientation)

Fall (semester 2): mid-July-December  (typically 19 weeks, including orientation)

Academic Year: February-end of December

Note: Students must take a minimum of 4 courses at MU during the semester in order to maintain full-time status. Most MU courses will transfer back to GVSU as 3 credits.

Orientation/Pre-arrival information

Macquarie Application Process

Step 1 - Students must apply and be accepted into the GVSU OASIS application system.

Step 2 - The Padnos International Center will provide all applicants with application instructions after the OASIS priority deadline.

Step 3 - Students must complete all required application materials for Macquarie University.

Step 4 - Students receive admission into the program and are provided with additional pre-arrival instructions.






Travel Information

Students will fly into Sydney International Airport. An airport greeting is available provided you submit the required form requesting this service. Additional information is available in the MU online Arrival Guide for International Students.
