Austria is known for being the motherland of many world-famous people, like musical composers Mozart, Schubert, and Strauss, or like Sigmund Freud, father of psychoanalysis. This country has the highest number of Nobel laureates per capita, with 19 Austrians being awarded a Nobel Prize (as of 2012). In addition, the Austrian novelist Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in 1905.

More than 60% of Austrian land is composed of the Alps, which is where Europe's second highest peak is located, together with other 13 peaks that are taller than 3,000 meters (more than 9,840 feet!).

The Austrian flag is one of the oldest national flags in the world, and it dates from 1191, when Duke Leopold V fought in the Third Crusade.

Founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz Stephan, Vienna's Schonbrunn Tiergarten is the oldest zoo in the world.

The Austrian National Library located in Vienna, completed in 1726, is one of the world’s major libraries. The library has a collection dating back to the 14th century and today, it houses more than 2.5 million books. The Library was formerly the court library to the Hapsburgs.
