Faculty-Led Study Abroad Guest and Family Member Policy

Grand Valley State University faculty-led study abroad programs are structured academic experiences designed for enrolled student participants. To maintain the academic integrity, safety, and group experience of these programs, participation is limited to officially enrolled students and authorized program personnel.

Family Members and Other Guests

Family members, partners, friends, and other non-participants are not permitted to accompany students or participate in any portion of a faculty-led study abroad program. This includes, but is not limited to, program travel, transportation, excursions, site visits, academic and cultural activities, group meals, and other scheduled program events.

Family members and other guests may independently travel to the same destination as a faculty-led program but may not participate in program activities or interfere with a student's program responsibilities. Students may spend time with family members or other guests during designated free time, provided they comply with all program policies and expectations. Designated free time varies by program and is not guaranteed.

Program Lodging

All student participants are required to stay in the lodging arranged or approved by GVSU for the duration of the program. Students may not make alternative lodging arrangements to stay with family members or other guests. Family members and other guests are not permitted to stay in or share program lodging.

Compliance and Exceptions

Students are expected to comply with this policy and fulfill all academic, attendance, and participation requirements. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved in advance by the Padnos Center for Global Experiences (PCGE).

Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from the program, in accordance with applicable university policies and procedures.
