2023/24 Cost Breakdown Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) Semester

This is the official estimated budget for this study abroad program. It serves as an estimated cost of attendance. Students often pay for study abroad through a combination of financial aid, personal funds, scholarships, grants, and alternative loans. The total amount listed is the Total Projected Cost and is the maximum amount of aid you can receive from GVSU. This estimated cost of attendance does not reflect the amount of aid you will qualify for, simply the cap on how much could be awarded to you.

Paid to Grand Valley State University Student Accounts by the regular tuition payment deadline.

IS 380 Course Fee

Paid to GVSU. The IS 380 course fee is $28 per credit hour. Participants of this program will register for 12 credits of IS 380.

Chubb Insurance

The Chubb International Insurance is required for all participants. The cost is $1.46/day. This estimate is based on 120 days, but your actual program dates may be different. Most programs are around 120 days, so this is being used as a general estimate. Once you have your program dates, you can calculate the exact cost.

Passport /Visa/ISIC

Passport fees $200. US citizens are currently exempt from paying the visa fee for Japan. For updated information, visit the website for the Japanese Consulate in Detroit.

Airfare & bus to Beppu

Paid to Airline Provider. Students are responsible for securing their own airfare to Japan. Instructions for getting to Beppu from Fukuoka will be provided by APU.

National Health insurance

Paid to APU - National Health Insurance (NHI) coverage in Japan. 10,000 yen per semester (Approx. $75 USD). The NHI insurance will not cover all related medical expenses. The Chubb policy will cover a number of things that the NHI does not cover.

Room and utilities -

Paid to APU. Bedding/linens/pillows. Fees include: Move-in fee, utilities, rental Fees. Renter's Insurance 3,000 yen. Bank transfer fee 1,750 yen. APU's suggested estimate is 300,000 JPY per semester. This will be due to APU prior to your arrival. Fees are estimated and subject to change. APU will send you a detailed invoice with a listing of all of the fees based on the housing you are place into. Based on 4 months

Meals

Paid by student on-site and based on 16 weeks. There is a student cafeteria and communal cooking areas in the AP House. Students who choose to eat in the cafeteria for 3 meals per day can expect to spend up to $30 US per day on meals. Most students will spend less, but this is the average on-campus rate for meals. Students who choose to prepare meals in their apartment can save a significant amount. 

Personal Expenses

On-site Personal Expenses such as basic personal necessities, local travel, etc. Approx. $150 per week. Local transportation costs are estimated at 50,000-80,000 JPY per semester ($400 - $650 USD).

TOTAL PROGRAM COST

There is a JASSO scholarship that exchange students can apply for totaling about $590 per month. The estimated cost for students who receive the JASSO is $17,015 per semester.

$22,455 (estimated cost for out-of-state students who do not receive the tuition differential scholarship)

Out-of-state students who receive a GVSU tuition differential scholarship will be able to use that scholarship towards the cost of this program. Exception: International students will not have access to the tuition differential scholarship for use towards the cost of study abroad, however, they may still be eligible for the Study Abroad Grant.

Estimated costs are based on a rate of exchange of 1 JPY = 0.0072 USD. Exchange rates fluctuate and may impact the estimates listed above. The rate listed here is the rate as of June 2023.

*Based on in-state, upper division tuition rate for 12-15 credits. If you complete more than 15 GVSU credits per semester during your year abroad, tuition charges for the additional credits above 15 will be billed to your GVSU student account after you return and PIC completes the transfer of credit.

**The cost of any study abroad program depends to a large extent on the participant’s personal spending habits and lifestyle. Personal travel, entertainment, gifts, souvenirs, and other types of personal spending are costs not reflected in the above estimates.

The Padnos International Center will be providing Partnership Grants for the 2023-2024 academic year (excludes summer). Decisions on awards will be made following the PIC priority application deadline. Some conditions apply. See PIC website for additional information.

 

Students applying for this program may also apply for the JASSO scholarship through APU. JASSO is only available to students participating in an exchange program at a Japanese university. The scholarship is equal to 80,000 yen per month or $590 USD per month.
