This is the estimated budget for this study abroad program. It serves as an estimated cost of attendance for your semester or year. Students often pay for study abroad through a combination of financial aid, personal funds, scholarships, grants, and alternative loans. The total amount listed as the Total Program Cost is the maximum amount of financial aid that can be awarded to you by GVSU. This total program cost does not reflect the amount of aid you will qualify for, rather, it serves as the cap on what can be awarded.

Passport fee $145. Students are required to obtain a visa to travel to Japan, but there is no fee.

Flight & Ground transportation

Paid to Airline Provider. Students will be given arrival instructions from ICU. Students can take a bus from the airport to ICU upon arrival.

ICU Health insurance/ISIC

$150 - $300 per year

A health insurance fee is required and is paid to ICU. Students may also choose to purchase the Basic ISIC card for $28 which will meet the PIC health insurance requirements.

Room and utilities -

On-campus housing is paid to ICU. Rates vary by type of housing. On-campus housing is not guaranteed. Students may need to secure off-campus housing.

 PLEASE READ ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDY IN JAPAN. Students may be eligible for a scholarship that will cover around $750 per month.

$37,041 (estimated cost for out-of-state students who do not receive the tuition differential scholarship) Out-of-state students who receive a GVSU tuition differential scholarship will be able to use that scholarship towards the cost of this program. Exception: international students will not have access to the tuition differential scholarship for use towards the cost of study abroad.

The Padnos International Center will be providing (2) $2000 Partnership Grants ($1000 per semester) for the 2019-2020 academic year, (excludes summer).   If more than two students apply for this program, decisions on awards will be made based on the strength of a student’s study abroad application and financial need. Students may be eligible for more than $2000, but two students will receive a minimum of $2000 in grant support. Decisions on awards will be made following the PIC application deadline. Some conditions apply.

*Based on 2019-2020 in-state, upper division tuition rate for 12-15 credits. If you complete more than 15 GVSU credits per semester during your year abroad, tuition charges for the additional credits above 15 will be billed to your GVSU student account after you return and PIC completes the transfer of credit.

JASSO SCHOLARSHIP (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarship - Each year, ICU sends application materials to GVSU students seeking applicants for the JASSO scholarship. JASSO is a substantial scholarship that offers financial support to exchange students studying in Japan. In past years, usually, one GVSU student has been a recipient of this scholarship each academic year, although this is competitive and not guaranteed. The scholarship offers a stipend of 80,000 JPY per month (approx. $750 USD per month). This is a competitive scholarship. JASSO is only available to Academic Year participants.

Other scholarships available through ICU include: JICUF Scholarship ($750 per month) and Takase Scholarship ($750 per month).

*** The cost of any study abroad program depends significantly on the participant's personal spending habits. Personal travel, entertainment, gifts, souvenirs, and other types of personal spending are costs not reflected in the above estimates.

This estimate is based on the currency rate of exchange for August 1, 2019. The exchange rate does fluctuate which may result in changes to the estimates above.

***Housing costs will vary based on location. Off-campus housing is more expensive than on-campus housing. Both the homestay and off-campus student residence include 2 meals per day, which will reduce the estimated meal cost above. Early application is strongly recommended.
