This is the estimated budget for this study abroad program. It serves as an estimated cost of attendance for your semester or year. Students often pay for study abroad through a combination of financial aid, personal funds, scholarships, grants, and alternative loans. The total amount listed as the Total Program Cost is the maximum amount of financial aid that can be awarded to you by GVSU. This total program cost does not reflect the amount of aid you will qualify for, rather, it serves as the cap on what can be awarded.

IS 380 Course Fee

Paid to GVSU. The IS 380 course fee is $28 per credit hour. Participants of this program will register for 12 credits of IS 380 for both Fall and Winter semesters.

Chubb Health Insurance

The Chubb health insurance plan is mandatory for all study abroad students. The cost is $1.46 per day. This estimate reflects 300 days, but the actual number of days of the program may differ.

Passport & Visa

Passport fees $200. Students are required to obtain a visa to travel to Japan, but there is no fee.

Flight & Ground transportation

Paid to Airline Provider. Students will be given arrival instructions from ICU. Students can take a bus from the airport to ICU upon arrival, unless restrictions apply due to coronavirus.

ICU Health insurance

Students will be required to register for the health insurance plan mandated by ICU and the Chubb insurance plan. There are differences in the coverage. Please compare the two plans so you are familiar with what each plan covers. The insurance fee required by ICU is paid to ICU.

Room and utilities -

On-campus housing is paid to ICU. Rates vary by type of housing. On-campus housing is not guaranteed. Students may need to secure off-campus housing.

PLEASE READ ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDY IN JAPAN. Students may be eligible for a scholarship that will cover around $590 per month. Students who are awarded the JASSO scholarship can expect their costs to drop to $29,862.

$42,598 (estimated cost for out-of-state students who do not receive the tuition differential scholarship) 

Out-of-state students who receive a GVSU tuition differential scholarship will be able to use that scholarship towards the cost of this program. Exception: International students will not have access to the tuition differential scholarship for use towards the cost of study abroad, however, they may still be eligible for the Study Abroad Grant.

Estimated costs are based on a rate of exchange of 1 JPY = 0.0071 USD. Exchange rates fluctuate and may impact the estimates listed above. The rate listed here is the rate as of June 2023.

*Based on in-state, upper-division tuition rates for 12-15 credits. If you complete more than 15 GVSU credits during your semester abroad, tuition charges for the additional credit above 15 will be billed to your GVSU student account after you return and PIC completes the transfer of credit.

**The cost of any study abroad program depends to a large extent on the participant’s personal spending habits and lifestyle. Personal travel, entertainment, gifts, souvenirs, and other types of personal spending are costs not reflected in the above estimates.

The Padnos International Center will be providing $2000 Partnership Grants ($1000 per semester) for the 2023-2024 academic year, (excludes summer).  Decisions on awards will be made following the PIC application deadline. Some conditions apply.

ICU offers several scholarships to exchange students. ICU typically sends application instructions for scholarship programs to the Padnos International Center. Once we receive this information, it will be forwarded to all eligible applicants.

 

JASSO SCHOLARSHIP (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarship - Each year, ICU sends application materials to GVSU students seeking applicants for the JASSO scholarship. JASSO is a substantial scholarship that offers financial support to exchange students studying in Japan. In past years, usually one GVSU student has been a recipient of this scholarship each academic year. This scholarship is competitive and not guaranteed. The scholarship offers a stipend of 80,000 JPY per month (approx. $590 USD per month). JASSO is only available to Academic Year participants.

Other scholarships available through ICU include: JICUF Scholarship (est. 80,000 JPY per month) and Takase Scholarship (80,000 JPY per month).

***Housing costs will vary based on location. Off-campus housing is more expensive than on-campus housing. Both the homestay and off-campus student residence include 2 meals per day, which will reduce the estimated meal cost above. Early application is strongly recommended. See ICU’s website for the most updated information.
