2023/24 Cost Breakdown for the University of Brighton

This is the estimated budget for this study abroad program. It serves as an estimated cost of attendance for your semester or year abroad. Students often pay for study abroad through a combination of financial aid, personal funds, scholarships, grants, and alternative loans. The total amount listed as the Total Program Cost is the maximum amount of financial aid that can be awarded to you by GVSU. This total program cost does not reflect the amount of aid you will qualify for, rather, it serves as the cap on what can be awarded.

IS 380 Course Fee

Paid to GVSU. The course fee for IS 380 is $28 per credit hour. Participants on this program will register for 12 credits of IS 380.

Chubb Insurance

Chubb insurance is required for all participants. The cost is $1.46 per day. This is a general cost estimate based on an average semester of 120 days. The actual number of days for your program may vary.

Passport fees $200. Visa fees are only required for students going to UB for the academic year. The fee for the visa is around $500.

Housing (on-campus residence halls)

Paid to University of Brighton. Rates vary based on selected housing. Paddock Field Falmer Campus housing rates Approx. 150 GBP per week (about $185 USD) for self-catering. Housing costs range and can be up to 200 GBP per week. Housing does not include bed linen, pillows, blankets, towels, cutlery, plates, etc. Rates vary based on semester and length of stay. Based on 17 weeks.

Food

On-site personal expense. Students can prepare their own meals or sign-up for a meal plan, depending on the choice in housing. This estimate is based on $110 per week.

Out-of-state students who receive a GVSU tuition differential scholarship will be able to use that scholarship towards the cost of this program. Exception: International students will not have access to the tuition differential scholarship for use towards the cost of study abroad, however, they may still be eligible for the Study Abroad Grant.

 

*Based on in-state, upper-division tuition rates for 12-15 credits. If you complete more than 15 GVSU credits during your semester abroad, tuition charges for the additional credit above 15 will be billed to your GVSU student account after you return and PIC completes the transfer of credit.

**The cost of any study abroad program depends to a large extent on the participant’s personal spending habits and lifestyle. Personal travel, entertainment, gifts, souvenirs, and other types of personal spending are costs not reflected in the above estimates.

 

Housing rates vary based on the length of time you are abroad and your housing selection. Prices quoted above reflect on-campus housing options only.

The exchange rate from USD to the GBP fluctuates daily. Significant changes in the exchange rate could impact the estimated costs above. The exchange rate used in the above calculations was 1 GBP = $1.24 USD which is the current rate in June 2023.
