STEPS Camp 2021 will have two options: a fully remote option and a "hub" option.

What is a "hub"?

STEPS is not allowed to offer a traditional face-to-face STEPS experience this summer due to COVID.  We have developed a modified curriculum that includes building a model airplane, making aviation & physics projects, CAD, coding, and more.  All of the classes will be live-streamed to our friends participating remotely at home.  All campers will receive a kit from STEPS that includes all the materials and tools needed to complete the curriculum.  Friday of camp will include an optional field trip opportunity to our Allendale campus, the other engineering facilities on the Pew campus, and an activity with the GV students with the Cook Leadership Academy.  Transportation on school buses will be provided to the campers, and we will plan on lots of empty seats to maintain 6' spacing.

The option of a hub will be offered to the campers selected in the lottery.  The hub will be at the Innovation Design Center on the Pew campus in downtown Grand Rapids.  Campers will be given an individual work station, access to GV's Wi-fi, access to a computer, snacks, lunch, and face-to-face access to the staff.

Strict COVID protocol will be enforced including online daily COVID assessments, mask-wearing, social distancing, frequent handwashing, and individual work stations.

Session 1: June 14-18, 2021 reserved for Battle Creek Public School students

Session 2: June 21-25, 2021 (open to all applicants)

Welcome to STEPS at Grand Valley State University!

Science Technology & Engineering Preview Summer (STEPS) Camp is a day-camp preview of science, engineering and technology for rising 7th grade students.  The theme of airplane flight is utilized to integrate technical classes and recreational activities, all the while encouraging social development and personal growth.  The students, in teams of roughly twelve, each manufacture and assemble a radio controlled airplane with the assistance of teachers, counselors, and volunteers.  By the end of the week, the students fly their airplanes at a sanctioned fly field, with the help of certified pilots.  Throughout the week, they learn theory of flight, utilize manufacturing equipment and tools, and ultimately learn a lot more about their own personal capabilities and potential.

STEPS Camp is gender inclusive.
