Tammy Stachowicz is a visiting professor in Brooks College at Grand Valley State University, where she teaches courses in creativity and innovation, intercultural competence, and diversity studies. Her teaching emphasizes experiential, portfolio-based learning, integrating creativity theory, ethical reasoning, and intercultural dialogue. Tammy's online diversity course was the first at Davenport University to earn Quality Matters certification, reflecting her commitment to rigorous and student-centered curriculum design. She received Davenport's Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014 and continues to earn strong student evaluations at GVSU.

Her research interests include the role of generative AI in teaching and learning, intercultural competence, and identity formation across generations. She has presented nationally on Melungeon identity and Appalachian cultural history, as well as on innovative teaching methods such as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Tammy is deeply committed to inclusive pedagogy, mentoring undergraduate researchers, and exploring how AI tools can support ethical, creative, and culturally responsive education.

Areas of Interest

My research interests converge at the intersection of identity formation, and intercultural competence, with a specific focus on the intricate dynamics of Appalachian identities. As a teacher in a liberal arts school, in an integrated studies program, I provide a holistic educational experience that spans various disciplines.

As a teacher-scholar, delving into the complexities of Melungeon identities aligns well with the interdisciplinary nature of integrated studies. The Appalachian region encompasses a rich tapestry of history, culture, race, and socioeconomic factors that contribute to the formation of distinct identities. While teaching undergraduate students I guide students through a nuanced exploration of how identities are shaped and perceived. This enhances their intercultural competence and equips them with a more comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of various disciplines.

Understanding and navigating Appalachian identities within the framework of diversity, equity, and inclusion is crucial for the development of socially responsible and culturally aware individuals. I recognize the importance of preparing undergraduate students to engage with the complexities of identity in a manner that contributes to a more inclusive society. By weaving critical race theory into classroom discussions, we all gain insights into the political and social ramifications of identity ascriptions and learn to approach interactions with sensitivity and informed perspectives.
