Off Campus Housing & Outreach (as of August 20, 2020)

Grand Valley State University has implemented numerous communication and outreach measures with students; landlords and property managers; and local public health, law enforcement, and governmental partners. This list of examples is current as of the date on the list, is representative rather than exhaustive, and describes measures both completed and planned.

  • July 13: Senior Leadership Team approval of Student Culture Team fall semester marketing and influencing campaign
  • July 22: University letter issued to area landlords and property managers expressing expectations, providing guidance, sharing university plans (e.g. cleaning and sanitation, parties and gatherings, CDC and National Apartment Association guidance, managing common space, etc.).
  • July 27: Fraternity and Sorority Presidents meeting occurred to discuss health and safety obligations for off-campus housing. 
  • July 28: University meeting held with landlords and property managers, university personnel, and county law enforcement and public health authorities, to answer questions, convey expectations, and provide assistance. 
  • August 5: Fraternity and Sorority Chapter Officers and House Managers meeting to discuss university expectations and resources, health guidance, facility sanitation, and chapter and national organization policies.
  • August 10 - ongoing: Fraternity and Sorority chapter house tours with chapter Presidents, House Managers, and faculty/staff Advisors to discuss isolation and quarantine, health and safety.
  • August 11: President Mantella’s August 10 letter to students, faculty and staff forwarded to area landlords and property managers. 
  • August 16: Contact information for area landlords and property manager submitted to Michigan Governor’s Office for invitation to local “community” meetings organized by state to convey state orders and expectations. 
  • August 17: Student Affairs’ August 17 letter issued to all enrolled students (regarding expectations) forwarded to landlords and property managers with Lakers Together Guide.
  • August 17: Additional face coverings distributed to all members residing in off-campus fraternity and sorority housing units. 
  • August 17: Fraternity and Sorority membership rosters and chapter health and compliance plans submitted to Student Life.
  • August 18: Off-campus landlord and property manager meeting held with GVPD and Ottawa County Sheriff to discuss law enforcement and university plans (self-assessment, testing, isolation and quarantine).
  • August 19: Protocol for notifying local authorities of violations of state Executive Orders within local apartment communities (e.g. gatherings) adopted.
  • August 20: Letter issued to all fraternity and sorority members about expectations for health and safety compliance, prohibitions on gatherings and parties, virtual recruitment, Lakers Together resources.

  • Planned: Annual Campus Safety Letter from GVPD and Student Affairs will be revised to include statement about limiting gatherings and parties
  • Planned: GVPD will partner with Ottawa County Sheriff to increase patrols of and enforcement in Allendale area apartment communities
  • Planned: Appropriate mechanisms will be publicized to prevent or report on violations of state or university standards
  • Planned:  COVID-19 training developed by Heath Compliance Team will be delivered to Recreation and Wellness staff and Wellness Peer Educators
  • Planned: Peer Student Culture Team campaign is in development with support from University Communication and University Marketing and will be implemented
  • Planned: Interfraternity Council will announce its decision to cancel fall semester fraternity social events
  • Planned: Panhellenic Council will announce its decision to conduct fully virtual recruitment
