Erica Hamilton

Erica Hamilton began her appointment as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs in September 2022. Her areas of responsibility include supporting university curriculum development and assessment, distance education initiatives, dual enrollment and inter-institutional memos of understanding (MOUs), as well as university program review processes. In support of shared governance, Dr. Hamilton also serves as Ex-officio to a number of faculty governance committees and functions as a liaison to GVSU’s Records Office, University Marketing, Information Technology, as well as the Assistant/Associate Deans.

Dr. Hamilton earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Michigan State University and began her career as a high school teacher, a role she held for eleven years. Aligned with her interests in curriculum and instruction, Dr. Hamilton also holds a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Teaching as well as a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy, both from Michigan State University. She joined the faculty of Grand Valley in August 2014, where she taught and worked with preservice and inservice teachers in the College of Education and Community Innovation. As a scholar, Dr. Hamilton’s areas of interests include teacher education, place-based education, educational technology, and the experiences of women in academia. Her research has been published in Teaching and Teacher Education, The Journal of Adult and Adolescent Literacy, The Journal of Museum Education, College Teaching, and Frontiers in Education. Committed to community service, Dr. Hamilton is a member of the Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Museum School Advisory Board. Dr. Hamilton is a member of the American Educational Research Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Michigan Reading Association.
