Abstract
The goal of our project was to drastically improve Corvac's prototyping process by superseding the current manual-welding operation with an automated system. To accomplish this, our team integrated a 6-axis ABB robot with an Alan Bradley PLC and an ultra-sonic welder fixed to the end of a pneumatic drive system. The cell was designed with steel barriers and equipped with Keyance 2D Area-Scanners for 360 degree security.
Corvac manufactures external under-body parts for several major automotive corporations. Creating a system flexible enough for new prototype designs provided unique, variable driven challenges. In order to achieve proficient welds, ultra-sonic welding was used because it provides precise amounts of energy through viscoelastic heating and friction to to generate fusion bonding without melting the plastic materials.
