Summer Student Success Tutor Application FAQs

Below are some FAQs regarding tutoring for the Oliver Wilson Summer Student Success Program 

  1. What courses are you hiring tutors for?
  2. What are the qualifications to serve as a tutor for these courses?  
  • Tutors must be a GVSU student, 
  • Must have completed at least one (1) full academic year at Grand Valley 
  • Must have taken the course OR a higher level of the course at Grand Valley in order to be eligible to tutor the course 
  • Must have received a B+ or better in any courses you intend to tutor
  1. What are the expectations of a Summer Student Success Tutor?
  • Tutors will effectively engage with students using an empathetic lens, understanding that all students use different approaches to learning material  
  • Tutors will show up for scheduled shifts 
  • Tutors will arrive to all tutoring sessions on time and prepared to assist students 
  • Tutors will report to professional staff any issues or concerns they see or hear about with student participants (conduct violations, attendance issues, etc.) immediately.  
  • Tutors will be able to explain concepts in course in multiple ways
  1. What are the work hours/dates of the Summer Student Success Tutoring position?
  • Each course meets at a different time Monday-Thursday during the second Spring/Summer session (June 25-August 5th) 
  • Expectations of the position may include afternoon tutoring/study table hours
  • Schedules will be determined with Oliver Wilson Summer Student Success Program Staff
  • Tutors should expect to work 10-20 hours a week
  1. What is the pay for this position?
  • Pay is $15 an hour
  • Lunch is also included in the position
