This course familiarizes students with the technologies currently used in the public relations and advertising professions. Emphasis is on working with technical specialists including graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and website developers. Basic principles of advertising, including its socioeconomic role; the function and operation of client advertising departments and the advertising agency; application of research, budgeting, and the creative process; media characteristics; and media selection. Practice in the copywriting process, from conception of ideas to finished copy for product and corporate advertising objectives. Students learn to prepare persuasive messages based on research and target audience insights and apply a core message through multi-media communication channels. Focuses on creating and developing social media strategies for public relations and advertising. Students will learn how organizations like nonprofit and for-profit use social media to achieve business goals. Students will explore social media content creation, user engagement, viral messages, advocacy, community building, and crowdsourcing. Offered fall semester. Prerequisite: Junior standing.
Winter 2027 - Online
Introduces students to the emerging field of social media analytics. Students will explore current research and best practices of social media analytics for public relations and advertising. Students will learn data mining, data visualization, social network analysis, sentiment analysis, search engine analysis, location analysis, and competitive intelligence.
