During the past year, how did the committee work positively impact your advising skills?

Allowed for a deep dive of ways we can share information with each other and make the LAAN site into a valuable resource for advising at GVSU. As the website represents a centralized platform to share policies and procedures which support the overall institutional mission of creating a more uniformed and collaborative approach for academic advising at GVSU.

What accomplishments did your committee achieve during this past academic year? Projects and initiatives worked on?

One of our ongoing accomplishments includes focusing on improving the LAAN website with direction from the Executive Committee. This has included looking at ways to store information both on and off the site with the inclusion of a Blackboard site for storing information for future committee members. This will be instrumental in helping new committee chairs seamlessly build on the work from their predecessors.

We have also worked with a team of advisors tasked with accurate representation of responsibilities and duties for professional advisors here at GVSU. This included creating two new webpages sharing data related to professional advisor work load as well as professional advisor responsibilities.  With the guidance and recommendations of SLT and the Executive Committee we will continue to work to be transparent about the work done by advisors at Grand Valley. Another task we took on was developing the LAAN site into more of a social/networking space. We created a form and structure to spotlight advisors every month from across the university. We are also going to continue looking at improving the professional development aspect of the site as well.

What work will you carry over that was unfinished to the next academic year?

Continuing to work to make the LAAN site a central hub for information related to advising at GVSU. A big priority will also be looking at ways to get more access to professional development at the university as well as through other organizations. There will also be some new policies in place next year and beyond and we will work to share relevant information on the site in an easily accessible form. Along with this we will also look to find ways to improve website traffic and use.

What benefits would advisors gain by joining your committee for F22/W23?

Advisors within this committee would have an opportunity to have a voice in the development of structures to support the consistency of sharing information among advising centers.  They would also have the ability to be creative in approaching the development of new resources that improve the working efficiencies of advisors at GVSU. This committee offers opportunities to grow one’s comfort level within CMS and be part of a team of advisors from various academic units to work collaboratively towards a common goal!
