Professional Advising at GVSU

Guided by the NACADA Core Values and the ethos of Appreciative Advising, GV professional advisors embody a hybrid model of advising that adapts to the needs of each student.  This asset-based approach empowers students to be the driving force in their own academic journey while also offering a space to talk about engagement, academic progress, and potential barriers to success.  This model also helps us:

•Create Individualized Academic Plans

•Identify and Assist Students Who Are Struggling (Academically or Personally)

•Connect Students to Resources

•Collaborate with Faculty

•Conduct Outreach Utilizing Enrollment Reports from Enrollment and Records

Professional advisors are expected to be knowledgeable about many things, including but not limited to: major curricula, general education, university requirements, university, college, and department policies and procedures, and university resources for appropriate referrals. Professional advisors also assist students developing post-graduation educational goals and corresponding career paths. The Advising Data link below will provide detail on the total number of advising appointments.  It does not encompass the follow-up meetings students have with campus partners (career center, tutoring center, student life, etc.) after their advising appointment.  The Advising Responsibilities link below will provide more detail on duties advisors perform outside of meeting with students.  These duties provide a better picture of how advisors spend their work week.
