Coursework and Clinicals

Can the four-year traditional Bachelor of Science (BSN) program be accelerated or taken part-time?

The three semesters of pre-clinical coursework may be spread out to a part-time pace but the clinical program is five semesters (not including summers) which cannot be condensed or lengthened.  There is no part-time option for this program.

The science courses build off of each other, so it is important to look at the pre-requisite requirements for each course. Academic Advisors are here to help you navigate course scheduling, though you may also view the science pre-requisite course sequence on the BSN Admissions Checklist.

How is the coursework in the program structured?

Students can expect one full day of class per week and 2-3 half days of class per week.  In addition, students can expect 2-3 clinical days per week, which may include some weekends and/or evenings.

How do I know if my courses transfer to GVSU?

The official evaluation of transfer credits will be completed after your application for admission to the University is complete. The GVSU Course Equivalency Guide is available to see if the courses you completed will transfer. Select your school and then leave the class code BLANK.

Where are the courses and clinicals offered?

All of the pre-requisite courses are available on the Allendale Campus, with a few course options available on the Pew Campus in Grand Rapids. All of the courses in the nursing program are offered in either the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences (CHS) building or the DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health (DCIH) building in Grand Rapids. The only pre-requisite course that is offered in an online format is STA 215.

Clinical rotations are offered in the West-Michigan area, with many sites located within 15 minutes of the CHS building. The Kirkhof College of Nursing is located on “Medical Mile” which allows students to walk to many of their clinical rotations.

Will I need my own transportation to get to my clinicals?

Yes. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from their clinical sites.

Can I take the prerequisite courses at another school?

Pre-requisite coursework may be completed at any accredited and recognized college or university that offers the equivalent courses. The Kirkhof College of Nursing will review all grades taken at accredited colleges/universities. Use the GVSU Course Equivalency Guide to find equivalent courses.

Clinical coursework will not transfer in from another nursing program. All courses in the clinical program must be taken at GVSU.

What information must be submitted prior to starting the professional nursing courses?

Physical examination, successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screen through a Kirkhof College of Nursing specified provider, documentation of Rubella, Rubeola, Polio, DPT, TB immunity, Hepatitis B vaccine, proof of 2 MMR immunizations (if born after 1957)* and current annual Adult/Child/Infant CPR (for the professional rescuer) certification through the American Heart Association. Each clinical course requires a current CPR certification, annual TB test, and current proof of health insurance.
