I am excited to make you aware of Graduate Assistantship (GA) positions available in KCON for the 2024-2025 Academic Year (both Teaching (TA) and Research (RA)). Graduate Assistantships provide an opportunity for students to participate in the academic life of the college via a teaching or research role and develop skills that will
translate to future opportunities.

Description:
A typical full-time assistantship includes the following responsibilities and benefits during the appointment:

  • A 20-hour per week work assignment for 16 weeks during the fall and winter semesters/13 weeks during the spring/summer semester, corresponding to the beginning and ending dates for a semester as published in the university schedule of classes and Bulletin.
  • Support from GVSU which includes:
    • A stipend of $4,000 each semester*
    • Tuition credit for up to 9 graduate credits per semester

 

  • A typical half-time assistantship includes the following responsibilities and benefits during the appointment:
    • A 10-hour per week work assignment for 16 weeks during the fall and winter semesters/13 weeks during the spring/summer semester.
    • Support from GVSU which includes:
      • A stipend of $2,000 per semester*
      • Tuition credit for up to 4.5 graduate credits per semester

*Stipend payments are divided and paid throughout the semester, so students receive a regular paycheck every two weeks.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Be fully admitted as a degree-seeking student in a Grand Valley graduate program at the time of appointment.
  2. Successfully carry a minimum course load of 9 graduate credit hours per semester for a full-time graduate assistantship or carry a minimum course load of 5 graduate credit hours per semester for a half-time assistantship.
  3. Be in good academic standing (not on academic probation or in jeopardy of dismissal).
  4. Be enrolled in class during the semester or semesters in which the student will be working as a GA.

Application Due Date: June 14, 2024 at 5 p.m

Selection Process: Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis. Applicants will be reviewed by the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Nursing Research and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in Nursing. Interviews may be requested. GA recipients will be notified by student email by the end of July 2023.

  • GA-TA Responsibilities: TA's will work under the supervision of a designated KCON faculty member to achieve the two primary goals of: 1) Assisting with implementation of the undergraduate nursing curriculum. 2) Developing personal classroom and/or clinical teaching skills. Examples of the assignments to assist in the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum include attending course team meetings, assisting with exam proctoring and scoring; assisting with health assessment and skills lab sessions, assisting with grading course quizzes and written assignments; and providing tutoring for course related topics. Example of assignments to develop personal teaching skills include teaching a clinical group, delivering individual course content; and participating in faculty development sessions. The TA may also be assigned to work on special projects from the Office of Student Services.
  • GA-RA Responsibilities Graduate research assistants will work in the KCON Center for Nursing Research (CNR) office. Their primary goal is to 1) assist Research Office staff in the support of faculty research, and 2) allow students to expand and/or apply their discipline knowledge and skills under supervision. Their primary duties consist of such activities as performing literature searches, retrieving articles from the library, transcribing interview tapes, entering study data, making copies, assisting in the compilation of grant proposals for mailing, and other research-related duties as required.
