Inclusion and Equity Faculty Associates provide leadership roles in a variety of justice-based initiatives for faculty university-wide. Faculty Associates function within the student-centered mission of the division and are highly dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice throughout the academic culture at GVSU. Faculty Associates serve at least two year terms representing a one course reassignment (or "buy-out") per semester. Their roles and responsibilities vary based on interest, expertise, and current needs of the division and university.

Faculty Associates- Former

"As a Faculty Associate for the 2018-2019 academic year, I worked with the Latinx community on campus and in Grand Rapids. My project addressed the diverse linguistic proficiencies in the Spanish classroom, focusing on heritage speakers. I did research on possible solutions to create a more inclusive learning environment. I also worked with Laker Familia, the Latinx Graduation and the Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival."

Mayra Fortes González, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Modern Languages and Literatures

Faculty Associate: 2018-2019

Project Focus: Research and develop logistics for a sophomore mentoring/student support program

Scott Stabler, Ph.D.

Professor of History

Faculty Associate: 2018-2019

"As a Faculty Associate in Inclusion and Equity, I was involved in ongoing educational outreach efforts in the Division. I worked closely with Relando Thompkins-Jones, Director of Social Justice Education, to deliver Implicit Bias and Microaggression workshops to faculty and staff campus-wide. I am an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Qualified Administrator and facilitated this process for Colleges, units, faculty, staff and student groups as well.

In 2017-2018, I also assisted in the development and administration of the fall 2017 Inclusive Hiring Symposium and met with the Ohio Five Consortium regarding inclusive faculty initiatives during their visit to GVSU in March, 2018. I also coordinated the Faculty Associate program in collaboration with Marlene Kowalski-Braun."

Dana Munk, Ph.D.

Inclusive Excellence Faculty Fellow, Pew FTLC and Professor of Movement Science, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Faculty Associate: 2015-2018

"My work as a faculty associate for the Division of Inclusion and Equity 2017-18 largely focused on inclusive excellence for faculty hiring and retention. Working closely with Scott Ayotte, Director, Affirmative Action/EEO Office, I facilitated a panel of GVSU staff, faculty, and administrators, along with an external consultant to discuss how we could enhance existing practices to move toward more inclusive employee recruitment and retention. I reviewed GVSU resources for hiring and recruitment and researched evidenced-based best practices for inclusive excellence in faculty hiring as documented by ADVANCE grant institutions. I also worked with Inclusion and Equity directors to present a roundtable at the Michigan ACE- Women's Network annual conference in Lansing focused on leadership development and mentoring for women and those underrepresented in higher education. Finally, I met with GVSU colleagues and representatives from the Five Colleges of Ohio to discuss moving the needle on inclusive excellence for student, faculty, and staff recruitment and retention which resulted in a verbal commitment toward a long-term partnership and possible symposia/colloquia on aspects of this work."

Wendy Burns-Ardolino, Ph.D.

Professor of Liberal Studies, Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies

Faculty Associate: 2017-2018

"It was an absolute honor and pleasure to serve as co-chair of the host committee for the White Privilege Conference (WPC) alongside the Division of Inclusion and Equity (Taran McZee, Jesse Bernal, Marla Wick, and Kathleen VanderVeen). From countless "get the word out" emails to last-minute social events regarding WPC, the experience of hosting and being a spokesperson for such a critical space will remain with me for a lifetime. We left a lasting social justice imprint on West Michigan through our service. Our journey began back in Winter 2016 at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) in San Francisco where we collaborated about the possibility to be the host institution of WPC. The past two years have been remarkable building partnerships and threads of community within GVSU and Grand Rapids."
