The Lakers rank No. 1 in the nation in total defense,
limiting opponents to 214 yards per game. Grand Valley also leads
Division II in fewest yards allowed per play (3.66). Through five
games, the defense has allowed just four touchdowns.
Grand Valley’s offense also ranks among the nation’s
best, leading Division II in yards per play (8.90) and ranking sixth
in yards per game (525.2). The Lakers’ 36 offensive touchdowns are
tied for first in Division II.
Receiver Kellen Reed and kicker Matthew Bacik picked up
individual honors for their games against Wayne State.
Reed was the GLIAC’s Offensive Player of the Week for
tying a conference and GVSU single-game record with five receiving
touchdowns. Reed accounted for the Lakers’ first four touchdowns and
finished with eight catches for 177 yards.
Bacik, named the GLIAC’s Special Teams Player of the
Week, kicked field goals of 33 and 28 yards and was also 8-for-8 on
point-after attempts against Wayne State. Bacik remains perfect for
the season, going 32-for-32 on extra-point attempts and 5-for-5 on
field goals.
As for the Huskies (4-1, 1-0), they are led by
sophomore quarterback Elliott Larner and senior running back Jake
Rueff. The pair have combined for more than 850 yards of rushing offense.
