No. 16 Lakers look to rebound against Saginaw Valley

Coming off back-to-back conference losses to Michigan Tech and Ferris State, No. 16 Grand Valley will look to get back on track Saturday against another GLIAC rival.

The Lakers head to University Center to face Saginaw Valley State in the annual Battle of the Valleys on October 24. Kickoff is 2 p.m.

Grand Valley suffered another tough loss to Ferris in last weekend’s Anchor-Bone Classic. The Bulldogs erased a 17-point first-quarter deficit to beat the Lakers, 41-34.

“I’m proud of the response of this football team after the Michigan Tech game and the week they put in for Ferris,” said head coach Scott Wooster. “We got off to a great start against Ferris and turned them over a couple times.

“We talked about how, in all games, particularly rivalry games, there are going to be some ebbs and flows,” Wooster added. “We got off to that great start and knew they were going to respond and have their opportunities.”

This year’s Battle of the Valleys pits two of the top units in the GLIAC — Saginaw Valley’s passing attack against Grand Valley’s passing defense.

The Cardinals have one of the strongest passing games in the conference, averaging 274 yards a game. But, the Lakers have the No. 1 passing defense in the GLIAC, allowing just 121.9 yards per contest.

Saginaw Valley has struggled to establish its running game, averaging 105.3 yards per contest, last in the conference.

Saginaw Valley upset the Lakers, 20-19, in last year’s contest, but Grand Valley has won 12 of the last 13 meetings.
