No. 13 Lakers set for showdown with No. 1 Ferris State

The biggest rivalry in NCAA Division II football takes center stage with No. 13 Grand Valley hosting No. 1 Ferris State in the annual Anchor-Bone Classic at a sold-out Lubbers Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on October 17.

It will be a tough match-up for the Lakers, who are looking to bounce back from their 41-35 overtime loss to No. 14 Michigan Tech last weekend.

Grand Valley holds a 32-25-1 edge in the all-time series, but Ferris has won nine of the last 12 meetings with the Lakers' most recent victory coming in the 2023 Division II quarterfinals.

The two-time defending national champion Bulldogs enter the game riding a 36-game winning streak, the longest active streak across all NCAA football.

Ferris State placed four players — offensive lineman Jarvis Windom, defensive end Tim Allen, all-purpose specialist Taariik Brett and quarterback Wyatt Bower — on the D2football.com Elite 100 Watch List.

The teams boast dynamic offenses that rank among the nation’s best in several statistical categories.

Ferris averages 554.7 yards of total offense per game, ranking second nationally; Grand Valley averages 511.7 yards per game, ranking sixth. The Bulldogs also rank fourth nationally in rushing, averaging 301.8 yards per game; the Lakers rank 17th at 238.2 yards per game.

Defense also figures to play a major role in the matchup, as both teams rank among Division II leaders in total defense. Grand Valley ranks second, allowing 223.3 yards per game, while Ferris State ranks eighth, allowing 246.8 yards per game.
