GVSU marks next stage for Blue Dot Innovation Lab, shaping the future of technology in downtown Grand Rapids

Grand Valley on Oct. 27 marked the transition from several years of collaborative planning to building as it begins construction of the Blue Dot Innovation Lab in downtown Grand Rapids, signaling a key milestone for a prominent physical space in the Blue Dot Ecosystem.

University leaders, faculty and staff members, students and community leaders gathered to highlight how this cutting-edge space, slated to open in 2029, will shape learning and working in West Michigan while enhancing the downtown Grand Rapids landscape.

The Blue Dot Innovation Lab is part of GVSU's vast Blue Dot Ecosystem, a network that connects all points of the university and the larger community to advance knowledge about the digital technologies that are transforming every profession.

"This is an exciting milestone for a project that goes beyond a new space to the importance of connecting the people, ideas and emerging technologies that will help activate our vision for the Blue Dot Ecosystem," said GVSU President Philomena V. Mantella. "We are energized by the power of this transformational initiative."

Students will develop digital literacy and explore emerging technologies, while the Blue Dot Ecosystem will also expand tech talent for West Michigan businesses as they meet the region’s evolving needs.

“Companies evaluating where to locate or expand increasingly look for regions where universities, industry and talent development are aligned,” said Randy Thelen, president and CEO of The Right Place. “Blue Dot sends a strong signal that Greater Grand Rapids understands technology’s role as an enabler across all sectors — and is investing accordingly."

Here are some examples of what the future holds for the Blue Dot Innovation Lab.

The Blue Dot Innovation Lab will feature interactive, emerging technology from the moment people walk in. Classrooms, conference rooms, research labs and study areas will all include the latest technological capabilities for teaching, learning and collaborating.

Specialized spaces are designed to deliver cross-disciplinary applications of emerging technologies, from a cyber range to a driving simulator.

A Technology Showcase will allow the GVSU and wider community to explore and test drive the digital future. The Immersive Cube will bring learning and research to life through virtual simulations and digital visualizations. And the X>Studio will offer a collaborative innovation opportunity to transform ideas to prototypes, allowing those involved to solve real-world problems. These are only a few of the future-focused spaces the Blue Dot Innovation Lab will offer to students and faculty.

GVSU's new College of Computing will also be housed in the Blue Dot Innovation Lab, which is an addition to the under-renovation Eberhard Center. The updates will transform GVSU's first permanent location in downtown Grand Rapids as the university expands its role in the region's growing technology industry.

The Blue Dot Innovation Lab addition will have a square footage of 58,000, while the Eberhard Center renovation will have a square footage of 166,000.

Faculty insight and collaboration from all academic disciplines are at the core of the Blue Dot Ecosystem. Faculty members will advance digital literacy for students of all majors and lend their expertise to businesses, K-12 schools, nonprofits and other organizations to help build AI solutions, accelerate industry-driven innovation, facilitate applied research and more.

"The integration of digital literacy across academic disciplines is crucial for all of our students. The Blue Dot Innovation Lab will be a central place where this integration comes to life," said Laurence José, professor of writing and director of GVSU's digital studies program. "I’m excited about how students, faculty, staff members, and the community will collaborate in this space, which is a part of the Blue Dot Ecosystem, to foster critical digital literacy skills.”

This new space is part of GVSU's commitment to empower students to thrive in a technology-driven world.

"The Blue Dot Innovation Lab will provide students hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology to learn digital literacy skills that employers are looking for and that are necessary to navigate our current digital landscape," said Lukas Hartley, GVSU Student Senate president. "This space shows how the Blue Dot Ecosystem will benefit the futures of our students and also the future of Grand Valley as a whole."
