Looking to bounce back from its loss to Saginaw Valley in the Battle of the Valleys game, No. 18 Grand Valley will face its toughest challenge of the season: Ferris State, the No. 1 team in the nation, in the Anchor-Bone Classic.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. on October 25 at Top Taggert Stadium in Big Rapids.
Grand Valley (4-2, 2-1 GLIAC) enters its biggest game this season looking to recover from its 20-19 loss to visiting Saginaw Valley last weekend.
The Lakers had an opportunity to take the lead late in the game as quarterback Andrew Schuster connected with receiver Lynn Wyche-El for a touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining. However, the Lakers’ two-point conversion attempt fell short, snapping their 12-game winning streak over the Cardinals.
“Defensively, I thought we played exceptionally. We played really, really well,” head coach Scott Wooster said. “We got them to turn it over a couple of times in the red zone.
“Offensively, we just could not capitalize on those. We talked about synergy and playing complementary football, and we just couldn’t cash it in and take advantage of that.”
As for their matchup with Ferris State, the Lakers are 14-12 in the all-time series and have won three of the last five contests over the Bulldogs.
Ferris State (7-0, 3-0 GLIAC) has rolled through its schedule, outscoring its opponents 377-67. GLIAC teams have managed just 10 points against Ferris State through three conference games.
A win for the Lakers would keep them in contention for the GLIAC championship and a potential berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
