Muskegon Innovation Hub awards grants to 14 small businesses

The Muskegon Innovation Hub at Grand Valley recently awarded grant funding to 14 small business owners through its Hub Direct Grant Program.

The program, managed by the Hub and administered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, continues its mission to provide direct financial support to West Michigan entrepreneurs, particularly those in underserved and rural communities, helping them to recover from the impacts of the pandemic and grow their businesses.

Over the past year, the Direct Grant Program has awarded $200,000 to assist small businesses with their operational costs, upgrades and expansion projects. This latest round of grants awarded $65,700 for a wide range of industries and community-focused missions represented in Muskegon’s entrepreneurial landscape.

“Our grant program’s primary goals remain centered on businesses disproportionately impacted by COVID-19,” said Diane Fleser, the Hub’s grant program manager. “This round of recipients reflects the diversity, resilience and creativity of our community. We are not just funding businesses, we’re strengthening the local economy, supporting cultural vibrancy, and fostering innovation.”

Kevin Ricco, executive director of the Muskegon Innovation Hub, addresses the grant recipients during an event on August 20.

Kevin Ricco, the Hub’s executive director, emphasized the impact of the program on local business growth.

“By strategically investing in entrepreneurs who are deeply embedded in their communities, we’re cultivating a thriving, interconnected ecosystem,” he said. “These grant funds empower business owners to take critical steps forward that may have otherwise been out of reach.”

“We’re not only impressed by the volume of applications but by the depth of passion and creativity our local entrepreneurs bring to the table,” Fleser said.

Since its launch, the Hub Direct Program has helped business owners overcome critical barriers, whether that’s investing in new equipment, launching innovative programs or reaching new customer markets.

For many recipients, the grant serves as a catalyst for growth, accelerating timelines and unlocking opportunities that would otherwise be delayed.

The businesses selected this round represent a mix of early-stage ventures and established community anchors, united by a shared commitment to Muskegon’s economic vitality and quality of life.

From sustainable manufacturing to community health, early education to cultural engagement, the breadth of this round reflects the program’s vision for an inclusive, integrated entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Each recipient not only receives financial assistance but also gains access to the Hub’s resources, mentorship and a network of supportive peers.

“Supporting these entrepreneurs is about more than writing a check — it’s about walking alongside them as they grow,” Ricco said. “We want them to know they’re part of a community that believes in their vision.”
