In their element: Special outdoor series by Philosophy Department explored humanities amid natural beauty

Five Philosophy in Nature events this summer and fall, organized by Ariens Peyalo, visiting professor of philosophy -- with support from the Philosophy Department -- allowed participants to read passages from works related to the theme of that session, such as wind or animals, as well as participate in other projects with a humanities focus.

The goal was to build community and appreciate the humanities while enjoying the natural beauty of West Michigan.

This photo essay captures moments from each session, starting in July with "The Beach and Sea."

The first session, left, was held along Lake Michigan. The last session in November, focusing on the wind, was held in the Arboretum.
