Grand Valley community celebrates life of Steven Workman

Grand Valley leaders join the West Michigan community to celebrate the life of Steven A. Workman, who died on December 5, 2025, at age 71. Workman was dedicated to Laker athletics and to the Grand Valley University Foundation, where he served as ambassador.

President Philomena V. Mantella reflected on Workman’s impact. “Steve embodied the spirit of Grand Valley: devoted, generous, and unwavering in his belief in the power of education and athletics to transform lives,” she said. “His commitment strengthened our university in lasting ways, and we are profoundly grateful for the legacy he leaves behind.”

Workman was passionate about growing Grand Valley athletics. His leadership and generosity were instrumental in building the Jamie Hosford Football Center. Along with members of the Hosford family, he helped establish the Hosford Family Excellence in Academics & Athletics Scholarship to honor James “Jamie” J. Hosford ’77. This scholarship continues both Jamie’s legacy and Steve’s dedication to strengthening opportunities for student athletes. Through the Workman Family Fund, he supported a wide variety of projects and initiatives that impacted every GVSU team.

Workman’s deep passion for supporting education and athletics was rooted in the values instilled by his family. Together with his father, he created the Schmidt/Workman Graduate Student Athlete Endowed Fellowship Fund in honor of his long-time partner, Kim Schmidt. The tribute reflects Schmidt’s devotion to her alma mater and their shared passion for GVSU athletics. The fellowship supports former student athletes who are pursuing graduate programs after their athletic eligibility has ended, ensuring that financial need does not become a barrier to completing their degrees.

Keri Becker, director of Athletics, said: “Steve brought an energy and belief to Laker athletics that inspired everyone around him. His generosity was matched only by his genuine care for our student athletes and coaches. Steve helped elevate our programs in meaningful ways, and his influence will continue to guide us forward.”

After attending Muskegon Community College, Workman earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master of business administration degree from Drake University. He was a partner in Filter and Coating Technology (FACT), a firm committed to helping customers meet product finishing requirements and advance indoor air quality solutions.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Workman was known for his generosity, mentorship and deep commitment to the communities he loved.

A celebration of life will be held on December 15 from 3-7 p.m. at Blythefield Country Club.
