Move-in week is one of the most exciting times to be a Laker, but if it’s your first time, the experience can be overwhelming. Colleen Bailey, associate director of Housing and Residence Life, answers questions about important move-in 2025 dates, advice on what to bring, and more.
When and where will I be able to view my room assignment? Can I still apply for Fall 2025 housing?
All first-year students will be able to select the exact room that they will move into during the room selection process. This process begins on June 24 and will continue through mid-July. Selection dates will be communicated with students through email and are based on housing application date. Once the room is selected, students can return to find the information in the myHousing portal within Banner .
And yes, we are always accepting applications for students to live on campus.
When will I be able to view my move-in date?
We are so excited to welcome students to campus for move-in on Wednesday, August 20, Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22. Students will be assigned one of these three days based on the building they will live in.
In the meantime, find information about move-in and housing in our Move-In Guide .
How can I best prepare for move-in this summer?
Connect with your roommate and start getting to know each other. Check your email and make sure to read through the information provided about how to successfully start your GVSU journey. All sorts of information is shared through email: move-in details, academic success, involvement opportunities and so much more! It’s a lot of information, but it is so important to read everything and understand it, so you can be ready to dive right into all that is waiting for you.
What’s one thing you recommend everyone bring when they move in?
Be sure that you have your student ID when you arrive on move-in day. It is one of the most important credentials you will have at GVSU and you will need it to check in and get your key.
We have a packing checklist that is really helpful for everything you might want to think about bringing. Don't forget to check in with your roommate to plan ahead on the shared items for your room.
What’s something you recommend they don’t bring?
Too much stuff! It is easy to overpack and bring everything you can fit in your car, but it is worth it to plan things out and add what you need as you go.
What are you most excited about for move-in this year?
I love the start of the academic year! It is such a fun and exciting time for everyone on campus. Everyone is trying something new and starting fresh. I am most excited to see how students make their living spaces their own — students are so creative.
What comes next after I move in?
Check out Laker Welcome to see all the ways you will be able to get involved starting on your move-in day!
