Grand Valley head football coach Matt Mitchell announced on January 15 that he will step down from his duties with the team to pursue other coaching opportunities.

The Lakers compiled a 117-31 record during his time leading the program. This past season, Mitchell guided the Lakers to the 2022 GLIAC Championship, a No. 1 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association and D2football national polls, and a berth in the NCAA Super Region 3 final.

Director of Athletics Keri Becker said she will begin a search for the program's next head coach immediately.
