In the first meeting between the teams, No. 2 Grand Valley plays American International at noon, October 8, in Springfield, Mass.

The Lakers (5-0) enter the game after beating rival Saginaw Valley, 29-10, in the Battle of the Valleys on October 1.

“To come out and get that type of win against Saginaw Valley that was 4-0 and get off to a 1-0 start in the GLIAC, that was a good team win, and we were pretty balanced,” head coach Matt Mitchell said.

American International (0-4) is coming off its bye week and is struggling offensively this season. The Yellow Jackets have scored seven or fewer points in three of their four games.

“Their most talented player is their quarterback Brandon Robinson who can really throw the ball all over the field,” Mitchell said. “It’s going to be a game where we have to feel out how they are going to attack us early on.”

Mitchell said his team needs to keep its sights on American International and can’t afford to think about its game with No. 1 Ferris State on October 15, looming on the horizon.

“It’s critical that we keep building momentum,” Mitchell said. “I’m not going to allow this team to look forward to the Oct. 15 matchup in Big Rapids. We need to be focused on us. There are plenty of things when we watch the tape we can improve upon.”

Lakers fans can watch the game on the American International athletics website. For the radio broadcast of the game, tune in to 96.9 WLAV-FM. Pre-game coverage begins at 10:30 a.m.
