GRPD police chief named to police standards commission

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Payne, '86, was appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to a commission that sets training, licensing and professional standards for law enforcement agencies.

Payne, who earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, was named to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. Whitmer announced Payne and three other new appointees on August 14.

Payne's term will run through 2021. He was sworn in as Grand Rapids' first African American police chief in July 2019 after working for the department for more than 32 years.
