Twelve middle school teams and nine high school teams have advanced to the Michigan Science Olympiad state tournament, after competing in the 35th annual Region 12 tournament March 23 at Grand Valley.

Students from 40 middle schools and 28 high schools from across West Michigan showcased their knowledge in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology during the competition, presented by Grand Valley's Regional Math and Science Center.

More than 1,000 students took part in various competitions that involved astronomy, herpetology, thermodynamics, protein modeling, geologic mapping and forensics, just to name a few.

The state tournament will be held April 27 at Michigan State University.

Region 12 covers Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties. This year's regional tournament was sponsored by Verizon, GE Aviation, Miller Johnson, Haviland Products Company, BizStream, and National Defense Industrial Association - Michigan Chapter.
