Michigan Street lane closures begin March 30
Michigan Street NE in downtown Grand Rapids, between Lafayette and College avenues, will be reduced to one lane in each direction starting March 30 at 6 p.m.
The lane closures – expected to last roughly six weeks – will allow crews to relocate a storm sewer in preparation for the construction of a parking ramp to be shared by Grand Valley and Spectrum Health.
City officials are not planning a detour for the Michigan Street lane closures; the road will be open to through traffic during construction. City officials recommend that westbound traffic use an alternate route that includes College Avenue, Hastings Street, Lafayette Avenue or Coit Avenue.
In order to reduce backups, drivers will not be allowed to turn left in the construction zone (along Michigan Street from College to Lafayette). There will be sidewalk access on the north side of the street during most of project.
The Rapid may close or modify bus stops on Michigan Street between Lafayette and College. Bus route 50, the Campus Connector, will be rerouted north on Coit to east on Hastings to south on Lafayette. There will be no major changes to bus routes 13 and 19.
