Honorary degree recipient dies
Former Michigan state senator Patty Birkholz, who was awarded an honorary doctorate from Grand Valley in 2013, died Thursday, May 3, 2018.
Birkholz was best known for her advocacy of the natural environment of West Michigan, and fought for environmental causes during her 14 years in the legislature. She died after a battle with cancer.
Birkholz, 74, was awarded a Doctor of Public Service in April of 2013 from the university. She served in the House from 1997-2002 and in the Senate between 2003-2010.
Following her service in the legislature, she served as director of the Office of the Great Lakes under Governor Rick Snyder, according to MIRS News.
