More than 250 high school seniors from around Michigan attended Boys State, a non-partisan, non-political mock government exercise at Grand Valley during the last week of June.

The event was the 80th annual such event for high school boys in Michigan. The event is sponsored by the American Legion.

The program mimics a model state and is designed to mirror the structure and operation of its respective state government. It is intended to instill character, the importance of civic engagement and patriotism among students.

During the weeklong program, the students learn about leadership, practical citizenship and the democratic process.

The program combines classroom work, lectures and camaraderie, as students take on elected and appointed roles to experience democracy in action and learn how legislation is passed.

Mike Stoll, academic advisor in the Kirkhof College of Nursing, serves as the chair of the board of directors for Michigan Boys State, where he oversees the education staff, program curriculum and day-to-day operations of the program.

"For 80 years, Michigan Boys State has provided young men the opportunity to build friendships with people around the state, develop leadership skills and most importantly learn more about themselves," Stoll said. "This weeklong government simulation offers students the opportunity to work together to solve real-world problems and truly is a week that shapes a lifetime."
