Events planned for National Public Health Week
Grand Valley's Department of Public Health is celebrating National Public Health Week, April 3-9. It is an initiative of the American Public Health Association (APHA) to create the healthiest nation in one generation.
The national effort highlights several public health issues and topics with a goal to help improve health, achieve health equity and increase life expectancy.
NPHW events include:
April 3:
• NPHW Forum: "Working Across Sectors to Create the Healthiest Nation" moderated by APHA President Tom Quade, will take place from 1-3 p.m. in Washington D.C. A live webcast and recording of the event can be found here.
• Yoga from 5-6 p.m., Kirkhof Center, room 2263; The Public Health Society invites people of all skill levels to join them for a yoga class. There is no cost to participate, but donations of menstrual hygiene products are encouraged. These items will be distributed to women in need through the GR Red Project.
April 4:
• Webinar: "Advancing Physical Activity through Innovative Approaches" from 1-2 p.m. This webinar will discuss innovative, collaborative approaches to promoting physical activity and preventing chronic diseases. Register here.
April 5:
• PIPES (Promoting Interprofessional Education for Students) meeting presented by Mental Wellness/Be Nice Initiative. Kandice Sloop from the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan will conduct an interactive session about the signs and symptoms of mental illness and the be nice. initiative. The event will run from 5-6 p.m. in the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, room 119.
April 6:
• Yoga from 1-2 p.m., Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, room 440. The Public Health Society invites people of all skill levels to join them for a yoga class. • "A Day's Work" film screening and panel discussion. GVSU Public Health, Occupational Safety and Health Program and MIOSHA are sponsoring a screening of this award-winning film, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Loosemore Auditorium in DeVos Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. A discussion panel featuring the film's executive producer, David DeSario, as well as experts in the field of occupational safety, will follow. Learn more about the film here.
