Sketches
Joel Stillerman, professor of sociology, wrote an article, "Educating Middle Class Children in Santiago: Cultural Capital and Socio-territorial Segregation in the Creation of Local Education Markets," published in EURE: Revista De Estudios Urbano Regionales.
College of Education faculty members Jay Cooper and Donald Mitchell Jr. were co-authors of an article, "Addressing Perceived Skill Deficiencies in Student Affairs Graduate Preparation Programs," published in the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice.
Patricia Clark, professor of writing, wrote poems, "Fig, Strawberry," published in the spring issue of Michigan Quarterly Review; and "Dragon Jar," published in The Plume Anthology 4.
Cheryl Kautz, affiliate instructor of computing and information systems, received the 2016 Blackboard Exemplary Course Award for her Internet Media and Programming class. The award recognizes outstanding development of community best practices through innovative course design using Blackboard.
Elena Lioubimtseva, professor of geography and sustainable planning, served as a panelist for track one proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation and focused on Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy and Water Systems.
Gordon Alderink, associate professor of physical therapy, gave a workshop on clinical motion analysis accreditation at the Gait and Clinical Motion Analysis Society's annual meeting held in Memphis, Tennessee. Alderink is president of the Commission for Motion Laboratory Accreditation; he gave a presentation, "Comparison of Lower Extremity Kinematics and Kinetics and Center of Mass-Center of Pressure Relationship Between a Classical Ballet and Jazz Pirouette: A Case Report," at the meeting.
Physical therapy faculty members Gordon Alderink and Barb Hoogenboom, and Amy Lenz, visiting faculty of engineering, gave a presentation, "Prediction of Hip Joint Center Location using Davis and Seidel Methods: Effect on Hip Moments During Gait of Normal Healthy Adults," at the Gait and Clinical Motion Analysis Society's annual meeting held in Memphis, Tennessee.
David Alvarez, professor of English, gave a presentation, “Cross-Mediterranean Migration in Dire Straits: Dystopian Visions and Critical Utopianism in Francis Alÿs's Installation-Event at the Strait of Gibraltar,” at the Annual Mediterranean Studies Association Congress at the University of Palermo in Sicily.
Valerie Rhodes-Sorrelle, senior strategic sourcing specialist, earned the Bert C. Ahrens Achievement Award, the National Association of Educational Procurement's highest honor, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the procurement profession.
Sandra Spoelstra, associate dean for research and scholarship for Kirkhof College of Nursing, was named an American Academy of Nursing fellow and will be inducted with the class of 2016 during the academy's policy conference in October.
