The second of three candidates for position of vice president for Inclusion and Equity gave a presentation January 21 in the Kirkhof Center.

John Fitzgerald Gates is president and CEO of Campus Diversity Agenda and principal of Criticality Management Consulting in New York City.

Gates said he brings a different perspective and a nontraditional approach to diversity and inclusion. Too many institutions, he said, rely only on increasing their numbers of students, faculty and staff of color. Gates said that representation is only the footing to build a diverse campus, it is not the entire structure.

“Diversity is excellence expressing itself as differences, similarities, complexities and tensions,” he said.

The final candidate, Jesse Bernal, will visit campus Thursday, January 22; his presentation is set for 2:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Grand River Room.
