Retiring art professor to share artistic process
A retiring art and design professor will discuss his artistic
process in conjunction with an exhibit of his work commemorating his
time at Grand Valley State University.
“An Artist’s Process: Ed Wong-Ligda on Creating His Work” will
take place Wednesday, January 28 from 4-5 p.m. in the Art Gallery,
room 1121, in the Performing Arts Center on the Allendale Campus.
Wong-Ligda’s professional painting career dates back to the
early 1970s; he came to Grand Valley in 1996 when he was hired to
develop and coordinate the Art and Design Department’s illustration
emphasis. Two years later he became the coordinator and primary
instructor of Illustration.
Wong-Ligda’s presentation complements his current exhibit,
“Veracity, Distortion, Reduction: Visual Explorations by Ed
Wong-Ligda,” which is on display in the Art Gallery through March 20.
“The title reflects my planning process,” Wong-Ligda said. “Part
of the process is determining what balance or relationship of
veracity, distortion and reduction I want in each concept and image.”
The exhibit features 15 oil-on-canvas paintings Wong-Ligda
created during his time at Grand Valley. He will retire as
Illustration coordinator in April.
Wong-Ligda completed his undergraduate work in advertising
design and illustration at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles
and received a MFA in painting from the University of Tulsa.
