The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has advised the university that a complaint was filed. Grand Valley State University is cooperating fully with the inquiry.
The university believes it is in full compliance with all its Title IX responsibilities, and the Division of Inclusion and Equity works vigilantly to ensure a campus climate free from harassment and discrimination.
Dwight Hamilton, Title IX officer and associate vice president for
Affirmative Action at Grand Valley, said: "I believe that the
Office for Civil Rights will ultimately conclude that Grand Valley is
in full compliance with Title IX requirements for preventing and
addressing sexual violence. Since the OCR issued its “Dear Colleague”
letter in April 2011, which discussed sexual violence, Grand Valley
has examined its policies, procedures and practices to ensure that we
are operating in full alignment with the OCR’s recommendations.
"Grand Valley has a Sexual Assault Response Team that
meets on a regular and emergency basis to review incidents of sexual
violence. Grand Valley has engaged our community of students, faculty
and staff to address sexual violence by raising awareness and
encouraging reports of sexual violence. Grand Valley further provides
supportive resources to victim/survivors and disciplines those
individuals found responsible. We also partner with our community
allies, including law enforcement, crisis centers and medical
personnel, to address the needs of victim-survivors of sexual violence.
