Pew Campus parking structure saves energy, costs

The parking structure on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus now runs on less energy, saving Grand Valley more than $46,000 each year and supporting the university’s sustainable vision.  

A lighting renovation was conducted after Facilities Services staff members performed an energy audit in 2011 to find ways to reduce energy consumption in the structure, which has more than 900 parking spaces. Fluorescent lamps controlled by motion sensors were installed, and compact fluorescent lamps have replaced stairwell lighting.

“The net result of identifying and installing different types of fixtures and control mechanisms resulted in an energy drop that was more than 53 percent,” said Terry Pahl, an engineer for Grand Valley.

Pahl said the new lighting system will save the university more than $38,000 in energy costs and $8,000 in service fees every year. Consumer’s Energy will lower the monthly meter fee, which will help fund rebates and incentives for the university.
