Lecture examines Salvador Dali and 'The Twelve Tribes of Israel'
Grand Valley’s Sheldon Kopperl, a professor of biomedical science
with an interest in religious studies, will give an informative
lecture in conjunction with the 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding
about Biblical sources for a series of works by the renowned artist
Salvador Dali.
The event on Tuesday, November 13, at 6 p.m., will be at Cook
Auditorium, in the Grand Rapids Art Museum, 101 Monroe Center NW.
Although Dali returned to his Roman Catholic roots and became
more devout after World War II, his interest in the State of Israel is
shown in his execution of two series of prints for Israel’s 20th and
25th anniversaries. The latter series, “The Twelve Tribes of Israel,”
represents the Biblical descriptions of the tribes combined with
Dali’s unique surrealism and politics.
