The Grand Rapids Symphony, in cooperation with Temple Emanuel, the
Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids, and the 2012 Year of
Interfaith Understanding presents a special concert, "We
Remember," Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17, at 8 p.m. at
DeVos Performance Hall, in Grand Rapids.
Tickets start at $18, or $5 for students. Mention the 2012 Year

"We Remember" features Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5
(Reformation) and Stephen Paulis' To Be Certain of the Dawn. The GRS
Chorus, Youth Chorus and five vocal soloists join the orchestra to
present To Be Certain of the Dawn, an acclaimed, large-scale Holocaust
memorial oratorio.
This powerful piece, written to bring understanding, conveys a
message of hope and forgiveness. Inspired by photographs taken prior
to the Holocaust, the work tells the story of faith and hope through
the eyes of children.
The piece was commissioned by the Basilica of St. Mary's in
Minneapolis/St. Paul in honor of the sixtieth anniversary of the
liberation of the Nazi death camps and the fortieth anniversary of
Nostra Aetate, the papal encyclical that formally pronounces the
Catholic Church's relationship with non-Christian religions.
The 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding, coordinated by the
Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University, is a
year-long effort to cultivate community interest and engagement of all
