A Grand Valley faculty member is in the semi-final round of the Carnegie Hall Great Arts Blogger Challenge currently underway at http://springformusic.com.

The month-long challenge has involved answering various arts and culture questions on a weekly basis. Among the current semi-finalists is Kurt Ellenberger, who teaches a course, “Music, Culture, and Aesthetics,” in the Frederik Meijer Honors College at Grand Valley, where he has been a faculty member since 1999. Ellenberger is a pianist and composer with an interest in the intersection of music and culture that finds its outlet on his blog, http://frakathustra.wordpress.com.

Forty-two bloggers originally registered to enter the competition. Sixteen were chosen for the second round. At the end of this week the field will be reduced to four. They will compete for the winning post next week. Audience voting continues until noon, Thursday, April 12 and accounts for one-third of the decision. Vote here. The other two-thirds of the vote come from the judges: Katrine Ames, former senior editor at Newsweek; composer Nico Muhly; and Douglas McLennan, founder and editor of ArtsJournal.

Bloggers who advance to Round III will be announced Friday, April 20 at noon. First prize is $2,500 and two tickets for each of the six Spring For Music concerts at Carnegie Hall May 7-12.
