JoAnn Wassenaar, associate director
of the Women’s Center, was interviewed by the Grand Rapids
Press about efforts by the Lakeshore Alliance Against Domestic
and Sexual Violence to address the increase in domestic violence in
Ottawa County.

Jeremiah Cataldo, visiting assistant
professor of history, wrote an article, “Whispered Utopia: Dreams,
Agendas, and Theocratic Aspirations in Yehud,” published in the
Scandinavian Journal of the Old Testament.
James Krikke, chemistry lab manager, gave a
presentation, “First Experiences with a University General Education
Level Green Chemistry Class,” at the 239th National Meeting of the
American Chemical Society in San Francisco, California.
Michelle Miller-Adams, assistant professor of
political science, gave presentations, “The Kalamazoo Promise: A New
Approach to Combating Educational Inequality,” at the City Club in
Cleveland, Ohio; and, “Can Universal, Place-Based Scholarships Reduce
Inequality? Lessons from Kalamazoo, Michigan,” at the Midwest
Political Science Association Conference in Chicago.
Roy Cole, professor of geography and planning, gave
presentations, “Motivation and Ability in Student Learning of Content
Knowledge, Critical Thinking, and Spatial Ability in a Large, General
Education, World Regional Geography Course,” at the Association of
American Geographers annual meeting in Washington, D.C.; and
“Developing Spatial Ability in Undergraduate Students: A Comparison of
Three Techniques,” at the annual meeting of the Michigan Academy of
Science, Arts, and Letters at Calvin College.
Ester Burns, assistant director of procurement
services, was honored by the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce as
Outstanding Advocate for Minority-Owned Businesses. The award was
presented at the Annual Business Connections Awards Luncheon.
Movement science faculty members Dana Munk and
Rick Albrecht conducted a workshop with athletic
directors from Grand Rapids Public Schools to help them implement the
National Standards for Sport Coaches.
Steve Mattox, associate
professor of geology, was named a co-principal investigator of a
$36,000 National Science Foundation grant to build a network of
Michigan univerities that accept credit-by-exam for high school
advanced geology courses.
Mark Staves, professor of biology and program
coordinator for the Professional Science Masters, and John
Stevenson, interim dean of Graduate Studies, gave a
presentation, “Use of Cross Disciplinary Groups to Improve PSM Student
Peer Education,” at the 66th Annual Meeting of the Midwest Association
of Graduate Schools, held in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Elena Lioubimtseva, associate professor of geography
and planning and director of environmental studies, gave a
presentation, “The Role of Russia in the Post-2012 Climate Change
Policy: Key Contradictions and Uncertainties,” at the Oxford
Roundtable held in Lincoln College in Oxford.
