Students will have the opportunity to discuss environmental issues
with the co-founder of the original Earth Day, former Republican U.S.
Rep. Paul "Pete" McCloskey of California. McCloskey will
participate in a virtual roundtable on April 22 at 8:30 p.m.
The event will be in the Pere Marquette room of Kirkhof Center
in collaboration with Field Reichardt, candidate for Congress and the
GVSU Student Environmental Coalition. Pizza and refreshments to be
served afterwards.
McCloskey, best remembered for his unsuccessful bid against
incumbent U.S. President Richard Nixon in the 1972 New Hampshire
Republican primary, will make a guest appearance through an Internet
hookup as part of local Earth Day observances. McCloskey and late U.S.
Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D-Wisconsin, were the principal co-founders of
the original Earth Day, held April 22, 1970.
The session will allow students to discuss with McCloskey the
genesis of the environmental movement and where it stands today, plus
critical environmental issues that need to be addressed.
