ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Middle school girls from throughout the area are
invited to meet and learn from Grand Valley State University
student-athletes, then attend a Laker women's basketball game in February.
Girls and Women in Sports Day, February 21, is sponsored by Grand
Valley’s Women's Center. A grant from the Nokomis Foundation makes the
event free for participants. About 300 students in sixth, seventh and
eighth grades are expected.
The day will begin at 3 p.m. in the Fieldhouse Arena on GVSU's Allendale
Campus. After registration, participants will go to their choice of
sports skills clinics: soccer, volleyball and basketball. Clinics will
be led by Grand Valley student-athletes and students from the movement
science department. A lunch will be handed out at 5:45 p.m., before the
group heads to the Laker basketball game against Saginaw Valley State.
An autograph session with the Laker women's basketball team concludes
the day at 8 p.m.
Schools interested in participating are asked to call JoAnn Wassenaar,
associate director of the Women's Center, at (616) 331-2748.
