Campus Leadership Week to celebrate student and alumni leadership

Throughout the week of January 19-23, the Office of Student Life and the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society invite the Grand Valley community to participate in various events representing the Five Phases of Campus Life recognized by ΟΔΚ: Scholarship, Athletics, Community Service, Social/Religious Activities/Campus Government, Journalism/Speech/Mass Media, and Creative/Performing Arts.

Featured events include, “America United: A Grand Valley Celebration”.  This event will honor the historic presidential inauguration of President Elect Barack Obama.  This university-wide event will be held on January 20 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Fieldhouse Arena with various viewing locations on all campuses.

On Wednesday, January 21, more than 600 student leaders will be celebrated at the “I am Grand Valley” Leadership Reception.  The event will honor “I am Grand Valley” nominees for their outstanding leadership skills and contributions to our campus community.  This event aims to celebrate campus leadership in all disciplines, everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided.  The reception will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Thornapple Room.

The week will close with Open House at the Student Organization Center and a performance by Grand Valley students entitled, Seven Passages.  During the SOC Open House, students will be able to take a tour of the Student Organization Center from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., where they can meet members of student organizations and learn to utilize this valuable campus resource.  Seven Passages is a compilation of more than 100 interviews with homosexual Christians.  The play brings together Scripture and the personal testimonials of homosexual people.

Not only are current student leaders honored during this week, but distinguished Grand Valley Alumni will also be recognized for their achievements.  A traveling exhibit highlights how student leadership experiences helped shape the lives of alumni who are now making a difference in their professions and communities.  The display will be featured at the MLK Jr. Day Celebration from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. in the Fieldhouse Arena Lobby, the “I am Grand Valley” Leadership Reception from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Thornapple Room and at the SOC Open House from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. in Kirkhof 0008.
